Last night, Daria arrived nearly twenty minutes later than agreed. She asked me jokingly, with a hint of concern, “Hans, have you waited too long? Did you get my message?” I always responded with a smile, despite the rare disease that doctors had found in her. She knew it was irreversible, or at least that’s what she thought.
“I know I can easily get upset with her because of what is happening to Daria,” Hans said. He meditated for some time in his room, asking himself, “What can I do to help her?” He felt upset and helpless. When he finally found the time to understand what was happening to Daria, it was a real shock. The verdict from the doctors was precise and concise: Daria had a particularly rare terminal disease that, until now, had been atypical. There was no medical research for that condition, the doctor from Mayo Clinic informed him.
After hearing the verdict, Hans thought, “At the end of it all, I will do everything I can to save her. If the doctors can’t, maybe there’s another way…”
Daria and Hans had met several years ago in a club. Hans had approached her for the first time and, out of nowhere, started talking in a fun and lighthearted way. Soon, they realized they had much in common; they didn’t even notice that they both worked in the same area of a pharmaceutical company called Roche. They hadn’t seen each other before because they had been working in different locations within the company.
It felt as if they were long-time friends who had just been reunited. From that moment on, they talked constantly and found excuses to meet somewhere during their work lunch breaks. Time often felt like an invisible tyrant, as they could talk for hours, and time always flew by quickly. They both enjoyed visiting museums, and they made it a point to go more often during vacations. They had many exciting memories to cherish from the time they spent together.
One day, while on vacation near Lima, Peru, Hans felt Daria lean on his shoulder as she cried, saying, “Why is life so cruel to my feelings? Why has God sent me this terrible disease, Hans?” In that pity-filled moment, Hans said, “God’s plans are multifaceted. We are here to endure not just the good times but also the bad.” After that, Daria’s eyes transformed into a beautiful smile, and her face took on a peaceful expression, filled with hope that perhaps the nightmare would end if it was God’s desire.
The disease appeared two years after they met at the club, when they were already dating.
“What sadness is happening to me?” Daria said with melancholy. “Why do I have such a rare disease?”
Hans had always been a strong person with good feelings, but he felt he could not remain just a spectator. “I need relief from this pain I feel for Daria’s condition,” he thought.
Daria now seemed like a woman of 70 years when she was only supposed to be 25. Time was passing quickly, and Daria was deteriorating. The color of her hair was changing from black to white, and her disease was a rare case of premature aging. Her cells were aging rapidly—what a terrible disease!
In 1890, there was no cure for that. Roche informed Daria that she wouldn’t be able to work for six months, and she probably wouldn’t return to work at all. That Monday morning, she received a phone call from the company. Daria explained over the phone that she was feeling terribly ill. Her boss asked with concern what could be done to remedy her condition. Daria replied, “Pray for me; there is no cure for this.”
Her medical condition was linked to a dangerous substance she had handled at her workplace, which Daria began to suspect weeks after discovering the cause.
The next day, Hans pondered about his dear Daria. “I must do something, or I could lose her,” he thought. “I will try to find a solution as soon as possible.” He knew that loneliness was worse than taking action. He loved Daria and was not indifferent to her pain. “My life would be different without you, Daria,” Hans said.
One night, he couldn’t sleep. Hans decided to test his knowledge of chemistry and medical science. He used all the resources in his extensive personal library. He realized that time was the most precious asset he had. Most of Hans’s family members had been doctors and had many books on the subject. They had the instruments, but he needed to find the missing piece of the puzzle to stop Daria’s pain. He spent most of his time reading medical books about her condition. It was not easy, but he felt he had to do it right away.
Thus, Hans made several attempts to create a cure for Daria’s rare disease and reverse the aging process. Roche had informed her that there was no cure at all, confirming what the doctors had previously said. Hans grew increasingly impatient.
But he couldn’t afford to give up.
Since he met her, he had always liked how lovely her name sounded and how well their personalities fit together. “You really are a person with many virtues,” Hans said. She replied, “Thank you; of course, you are too.” As Daria said this, tears filled her eyes. Hans felt miserable and helpless at that moment, wishing he could do something for this extraordinary girl with her strange condition. How could he explain to Daria how hard he was trying to find a remedy for her problem but hadn’t succeeded yet? Hans chose not to say anything.
During this time, it was as if they spent hours in silence, unsure of what to do. When Daria regained her emotional balance, she felt a deep peace in her soul. The expression on Hans’s face and what he had told her made her heart race. “Hans is truly unique,” she thought.
Hans was a sort of counselor to Daria. He simply hugged her and whispered in her ear, “Don’t worry; I will do everything possible so that when you wake up one day and look in the mirror, you see a young person like the one I met five years ago.”
The next morning, as Hans was walking to Roche for work, which fortunately wasn’t far from his home, he had a brilliant idea about what he could combine to possibly save Daria’s life. When he arrived at the lab, he couldn’t stop experimenting with different substances, knowing he was on the brink of discovering the cure if he remained persistent. He spent countless hours working extra shifts, hoping to alleviate Daria’s suffering.
In two months, when he was working hard, two colleagues, Marim and Juliana, asked him why he was doing all of this. They offered to help him during their extra hours in the office, which Hans greatly appreciated. They studied Daria’s blood DNA to investigate what was happening with her case of premature aging.
What Juliana discovered in Daria’s blood during her research amazed Hans and Marim. They found a problem with a particular part of her DNA molecules that was sending signals for Daria to age quickly. They finally understood why her hair was changing from black to white, why her muscle mass was declining, and why she was experiencing all the typical aging problems, like osteoarthritis and arthritis.
The next day was bright and hopeful when the sun shone directly on Daria’s house. They went early with the cure, believing it would address Daria’s issues. Marim explained a little about what was happening with her cells and told her that Hans would be giving her a bitter remedy. “Just take it; it’s best not to ask questions,” Hans said. Unfortunately, he could only watch as pain crossed Daria’s face for the three of them. Marim and Juliana grew impatient.
Marim advised Hans, “I know you have an uncle named Karl. Maybe he can help.”
By this time, Daria appeared to be a 120-year-old woman instead of someone in her twenties. “What should I do?” Hans thought desperately. “Should I call Uncle Karl?” Instead of solving the situation, he felt like he was making things worse. Just then, an enlightening thought struck him, and he decided to call Uncle Karl. His uncle had told him that when he needed to fix a serious problem, he should reach out to Mario, his assistant, who had special intuition and knowledge of natural medicine and was a good priest. Perhaps religion could help since this disease might be a part of some past-life karma.
Mario was a healer who was well-versed in the properties of lesser-known medicinal plants. He always prayed at Santa Maria Church. Without hesitation, Hans decided to call him out of desperation, worried he might have made a grave mistake with the person he loved most. No one answered the first call, but he persisted until someone finally picked up. He explained Daria’s premature aging issue, emphasizing how young she was. “Take a deep breath and take it all in stride,” replied the healer. Then Mario told him that to reverse the “damage,” it was necessary to obtain a rare, unique stone.
“What is the name of that stone?” Hans asked excitedly.
“It’s called ‘Diadia.’ It can only be found in Australia, and there are very few available, and they’re very expensive. You need to go to Australia to get one,” Mario replied.
“If you really want to save Daria, you should obtain one right now since there is no time to lose. This rare disease can be reversed with that stone, medicinal herbs, and prayer to God.”
After receiving this unexpected response, Hans was absorbed in thought. “How do I get the ‘Diadia?’” he wondered.
After a day of seeing Daria looking much older with white hair and severely damaged skin, Hans packed his bags and left for Australia.
